Unlike some other cities in the United States, the craft coffee roasting scene in Los Angeles is still very young. Pioneers such as Intelligentsia and Handsome Coffee Roasters have made quite the name for themselves, but still leave a lot of room for other roasters to claim their stake. Based out of Altadena on the eastside of Los Angeles, Plow & Gun is a new craft coffee maker roasting seasonal single-origin coffee, served with a perfectionism bordering on obsession. Their approach differs from the corporate coffee houses like Starbucks by taking the time select beans from small farms in Africa, Central America and South America, and then roasting them here in Los Angeles in small batches by hand. The end result is a locally made, extremely fresh, quality product. Plow & Gun offers take home bags of whole beans, hot pour over coffee, cold-brewed coffee over ice, and my favorite, the coffee pop. This revolutionary coffee pop is a whole new way to enjoy a cup of joe, cold-brewed coffee sweetened with piloncillo and cardamom, carbonated and served on tap over ice. It is a MUST try. You can find them weekly at the Altadena Farmers Market, and at more locations in the future.
