Straight out of Los Angeles, the Cosmic Kids have been making name for themselves in the local electronic music scene most notably with their hit track Reginald’s Groove. Their new remix of the Trujillo track You Keep Me is another good one, with a solid deep-house sound that emits a real groovy atmosphere. I like the contrasting combo of disco guitar/synths and the heavy hitting deep bass line.
Tiger & Woods is quickly ascending to the top of the house scene with unique flavor of disco inspired music. Their technique involves taking parts of old school disco and funk tracks, and then condensing them into new samples that have a more modern and up tempo feel. It’s like funk distilled into an 8 beat count. The driving beat and super funky bass line seems to always get me groovin’, and their new remix of Pitchben’s track Stand Up is on fire.
Over the weekend I was listening to a Triple J mix by Classixx and heard a super fun remix of the Marvin Gaye song Just Like Music. It’s a combination of Marvin’s fantastic soul voice and super groovy old school house accompaniment. It’s always exciting to find little gems like this in DJ mixes, and Classixx are probably the best at finding these unknown tracks.
Belgian-Australian musician Gotye burst onto the indie rock scene over the last couple years with his album Like Drawing Blood and the popular music video for the track “Somebody I Used To Know“. Already big in Australia, Gotye is now starting to get some buzz in America with his third album Making Mirrors. My favorite from this album is “I Feel Better”, a throwback track to the days of Motown with great piano, horns and tamborine.[TheFoxIsBlack]
Just got my hands on this Hot Toddy remix of Never Gonna Reach Me by Crazy P, and I’ve been jammin’ to it non-stop ever since. Originally composed by Crazy P as a mellow soul track, Hot Toddy ramps up the groove into a disco anthem full of guitars and pianos with a nice house beat. I’m really diggin’ the female vocals on this track too. All in all, it’s a must listen.
“Great White Buffalo hail from the West, and no they’re not cowboys but they’re pretty wild. The rockers call L.A. home and have been rounding up a solid following in the City of Angels for the past year. Their deep gritty vocals paired with the bands classic-meets-contemporary rock sound, draws comparisons to The National, and with their electric sound it’s no wonder they’ve been creating a buzz. Great White Buffalo may be relatively new to the scene, but they are ready to lead the pack.”
When I first listened to Some Nights by Fun., my initial thoughts were “I’m not sure what I’m listening to, but its amazing!” It’s like a melting pot of choir music, indie rock and African drum beats. Formed in 2008 by the lead singer of The Format Nate Ruess, they are most known for their hit song We Are Young used in the Chevy Sonic commercial, but have released two full length albums that certainly pushing the limits of indie rock. I like how their tracks adopt a different rhythm and use a fresh batch of instruments than their muscial peers, in addition Nate’s fantastic voice.
The February mix, in true Doppelganger fashion, is all over the place. You see one version of me and then a completely different one, yet it’s the same person. We start with some 80′s pop, then transition into some REAL House music (REAL is in caps for a reason, it’s real Chicago House, groovy and funky) and then finish off with some heavier electro/deep house of which the last track Riddle Of Steel (Classixx Version) is one of my favorites ever. Even in the dead of winter you can always count on us Californians to be able to conjure up the essence of the beach and summer, mainly because it’s such an important part of our culture, but also that we can still go to the beach when it’s 75 degrees in January. Los Angeles natives and disco masterminds Classixx have released this week a new track called “A Fax From The Beach.” A smooth Caribbean beat with soothing synths, very relaxing like listening to waves hitting the shore. The photograph above is one I shot in the Pacific Palisades a few weeks ago which could easily be a sunset from mid summer or mid winter. Very serendipitous to capture a seagull in the frame at that exact moment.
It is kind of hard to explain exactly what the Seaquence Music Generator is without opening the site a playing with it yourself. In a sense it’s a program that creates a variety of musical organisms that live in a petri-dish like composition that is all completely customizable by the user. Each organism can be adjusted to produce sound at a high or low frequency, and then further manipulated to play a grid of notes at various BPM (beats per minute.) Go check out Seaquence and start making your own masterpiece today.
The January of installment of the monthly Doppelganger Mix spans odd ends of the music spectrum, but comes together nicely as a whole. We start with some funky love songs from italian nu-disco masters Tiger & Woods to an old school jam by Kylmaxx. Next moving to the heavier deep house track Reginald’s groove and closing out with Mark E’s slammin’ disco-house jam R&B Drunkie which takes samples from a Janet Jackson. Whether heavy or mellow, I like to think the progression of tracks in this mix attain a continuous funky groove and open your ears to some very talented artists contributing to the new disco/funk scene.
