In the constant pursuit of becoming well skilled in as many crafts as possible, I decided about 6 months ago I would design and build a canvas backpack from scratch. The inclination for this endeavor stems from the fact that my current backpack is a little too small for walking back from the market with groceries, and not big enough to fit ample clothes for weekend trips. So instead of just buying a bigger backpack like any normal person would, I figured it would be a rewarding challenge to attempt to build one myself. By studying the construction of other backpacks and using my skills of knowing how to build other things, the resulting product achieves the utility needed and surprisingly high level of build quality for a first attempt. Additionally, this project serves as an example of how us Americans aren’t simply consumers, but craftsmen with the pioneering spirit to design and build goods with our own hands, lets not let this attitude fade away. I was very moved and inspired by their recent TV commercial which honors our great manufacturing history, and calls for today’s Americans to keep that tradition alive and respect those that are doing so. As for myself, I strive to abide by this doctrine; I work on my own car, make my own furniture and am currently making a canvas/leather backpack.
